On drawing slowly

There is a kind of drawing you make when you are trying to get something down before it leaves, and a kind you make when you have decided it is not going anywhere. The second kind is almost always better, and I almost never make it.

The fast drawing

The fast drawing is a note. It has one job: to remember. It does not care about the weight of a line or whether the shadow side is actually darker. It is useful and ugly, like a receipt.

The slow drawing

The slow drawing starts the same way and then refuses to stop. Somewhere around the twentieth minute you notice the thing you were drawing is not the thing you thought you were drawing. That is the whole point of it.

Drawing is taking a line for a walk. — Paul Klee
